Former Bangladeshi Premier Faces Charges

(MENAFN) A Bangladeshi tribunal on Thursday officially charged ex-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, along with two of her close associates, in absentia for alleged crimes against humanity related to the July uprising last year, which ultimately led to her removal from office.

A panel of three judges from the International Crimes Tribunal, led by Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Mazumder, issued the indictment.

The charges were brought against the exiled leader Hasina, the former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, and ex-Inspector General of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun.

This special court, created to handle Hasina’s case, began its legal proceedings in June.

The former leader, aged 77, stands accused of having authorized security forces to commit violent acts that resulted in fatalities and injuries during the uprising.

It is reported that both Hasina and Khan are currently residing in India, while Mamun, the former police chief, remains in detention.

During the session, the accused did not have personal legal representatives present; a lawyer appointed by the state acted on their behalf throughout the hearing.

Mamun has confessed to participating in the offenses and is now cooperating with the prosecution by serving as a witness in the ongoing trial.
